In the proximal course the tibial nerve runs deep to the muscles with the popliteal artery.
Distally, together with the posterior tibial artery it enters the tarsal tunnel which is formed by the retinaculum flexorum and the bone of the medial malleolus. It is the main entrapment site of the tibial nerve (tarsal tunnel syndrome).
